Style Superstar Of The Week

The 2010 Emmy’s proved to be the biggest style event of the week, as some of our fave celebs strutted down the red carpet in absolutely gorg dresses. So when it came time to choose our Style Superstar, we thought it only fitting to revisit Sunday’s red carpet and declare the best of the best dressed.

Of course, if you read our post-Emmy’s fashion recap, you know that it was a pretty close race between “Glee” songstress Lea Michele and “Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev, but we’ve finally declared one of them a winner. Keep reading to find out who came out victorious, plus whose look deserved the equivalent of a fashion Razzie!

As sophisticated as Lea looked at the Emmy’s, we’re going to have to name Nina our Style Superstar of the Week. The girl was an absolute show-stopper in a sparkly peach, one-shoulder Zuhair Murad dress. We felt like, on the wrong person, this dress could have easily been over the top, especially if paired with the wrong accessories or hairstyle. But Nina had all her bases covered; her up-do and droplet earrings were perfect matches for the stunning dress. So, for that, Nina takes home the win.

This week’s worst dressed shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. Everyone was talking about January Jones’ shocking blue Versace dress, and not for the right reasons. While January was seemingly trying to be avant-garde, she might have gone a couple of steps too far. Her strapless dress (which came equipped with a serious train!), had an unflattering bustier-style top and an overwhelming bottom. This choice lands her in the week’s bottom.

Dolce & Gabbana scale back in Japan

Dolce & Gabbana has announced that it is dramatically scaling back operations in Japan of its D&G line, which is aimed at the younger fashion market.

The Italian fashion house has blamed the decision to halt the distribution of the D&G ready-to-wear lines, leather accessories and shoe collections in Japan on the scarcity of available locations for its boutiques and the widespread availability of counterfeit products.

The decision to regroup in Japan comes in the wake of Versace and French Connection UK leaving the market entirely within the last year.

It also underlines the ground-shift in purchasing patterns in Japan, where consumers are increasingly focusing on mid-range clothing lines and other fashion items.

The Dolce & Gabbana announcement came shortly before Fast Retailing Co., the operator of the hugely popular Uniqlo chain of casual clothing shops, announced that it will open its first domestic flagship store in Osaka’s Shinsaibashi retail district on Oct 1.

Sixties house got all spaced out

A carefully planned refurbishment – with Astroturf – gave this 1960s family home a new lease of life

ORIGINALLY BUILT in the 1960s, 76 Fortfield Road, Terenure, Dublin 6W was comprehensively refurbished and added to in 2002. Detailed and carefully planned, the work gave number 76 a completely new double-fronted facade as well as 205sq m (2,206sq ft) of bright, comfortable space ideal for family living. The rear garden has been made “small boy proof” with an Astroturf lawn and the opened-up attic is now an self-contained eyrie with an ensuite bathroom.

The generous floor space is divided into five bedrooms, three reception rooms and a large, open- plan kitchen/breakfastroom. Savills is looking after the private treaty sale and the asking price is €865,000.

The entrance hallway and a study apart, the ground-floor living areas have solid French oak floors and flow in open-plan style from the kitchen/breakfastroom/ diningroom across the back of the house. The kitchen has a polished granite worktop large enough to sit six, and a Stanley range. A box window provides light and a peaceful reading nook overlooking the garden. Attractive, glazed-glass double doors give the option of closing off the front-facing sitting room which has a large bay window and a limestone fireplace. Also at ground level, the original garage has been converted into a good-sized study with a window cleverly lighting the workspace.

Four of the bedrooms and a family bathroom are off the first-floor landing, itself a squarish space with light coming from many angles. The main bedroom is to the rear and has been fitted with coolly stylish wardrobes and a chest-of-drawers, a pair of large velux windows and an ensuite shower room finished with pale blue Versace tiles.

The attic bedroom has another set of large velux windows as well as an ensuite shower, a pine floor, eaves storage – and a peaceful privacy.

As well as the Astroturf the rear garden has a paved patio area, a Barna shed and the sheltering growth of trees and shrubs. There is side access. A couple of high, old trees give privacy to the front too, and there is gravelled parking for up to three cars.

The Rachel Zoe Project

Tuesday, August 31, 2010: The Rachel Zoe Project

This season has lacked a little bit of the drama since Taylor has left, but honestly, I kind of like it that way. Normally, I love when there’s a crazy person on a reality TV show, but Taylor was just so mopey and miserable all the time that it sucked the joy out of watching this show about fashion.

Now it is all about Rachel and the wonderful Brad (I just want to give that guy a great big hug) and unfortunately there’s a lot more of Rachel’s husband Rodger. It’s not that he’s terrible, but I want the fashionista’s husband to be more Simon van Kampen fabulous. Red leather pants and the like, instead of seeing him shop for lingerie for his wife.

Tonight Rachel and company head to Milan and Brad gets to be in the presence of Donatella Versace. Not even Maya Rudolph Donatella, real Donatella. I’m jealous and thrilled on his behalf. Also, there’s a lot of talk about Rachel having a baby.

The show airs on Bravo at 10 PM. There’s also Teen Mom. All your baby needs are covered for the night.

Jenna Fischer at Emmy Awards

jenna fischer emmys Get the Look: Jenna Fischer at Emmy Awards

Last night, I was among the beautiful and bedazzled at the Primetime Emmy Awards, including Jenna Fischer, who was decked in a gorgeous vintage Versace gown.

The dress was unique in that it was vintage, but made modern by graphic red appliqués. “With that in mind we chose to keep the makeup simple and fresh and neutral. The last thing I wanted to do was compete with the amazing color of the dress,” says Molly R. Stern, for CoverGirl.

“To start, I prepped Jenna’s skin with Jurlique Lavender Hydrating Mist, then I lightly moisturized her skin with SK-11 facial treatment essence. Next I based her skin with Chantecaille Future Skin foundation. On Jenna’s cheek, I wanted the look to be flushed, but not too rosy. I chose COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Plush Peach for the perfect glow. Jenna’s eyes are simple, I based the lid with By Terry’s Ombre Blackstar in bronze fire. Then I dusted the metallic beige of the NARS duo shadow in Rajasthan over the top and up into the crease. For her lash line I smudged out the COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast in Brown Blaze and then coated her lashes with COVERGIRL LashBlast Fushion in Brown.”

“Finally, we wanted her lip to look defined yet super soft. A nude with a pinch of color. I went with the sheer stain of Josie Maran magic marker lip and cheek stain in Mambo and went over that with COVERGIRL Wetslicks Amazemint Lipgloss in Freedom of Peach. Her overall look highlighted her features without ever overpowering her. A delightful finish for a delightful gal.”

Brooke Shields breaks her hand while rehearsing for Los Angeles musical

Brooke Shields has reportedly broken her hand in a painful mishap while rehearsing for a Los Angeles musical.

The 45-year-old actress is understood to have taken a tumble as she prepared for her role in Leap Of Faith, a stage production due to open in October.

Her rep confirmed the nasty injury to People.com but assured fans it will not affect Shields’ performance.

’The cast will be off before previews on September 11,’ said the rep. ‘It was a minor break and did not affect the production schedule.’

The former model, who shot to fame as a teenager in The Blue Lagoon, will star alongside Raúl Esparza in the show, opening on October 3 at the Ahmanson Theatre.

A twice-married New Yorker, Shields has two daughters Rowan, 7, and Grier, 4.

Emmy Awards

Yes ladies, we appreciate it must be terribly exciting to be nominated for an Emmy award – to have your astounding talents recognised by the powers of Telly land, as well as your fellow peers, bla bla. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty, it’s all about The Dress, non? So we hope your seamstress is at the ready and your stylist is set for this Sunday when the Emmy Awards kick off because, boy, will Grazia Daily be frock-watching. In fact, we’ve already started making bets on which gown you’ll choose. We recommend you take note of our suggestions so you don’t let us down on the night. Thanks in advance.

We begin with Lea Michele who’s been making quite the impact on the red carpet of late – from going all ‘Legs McGee’ in a variety of thigh-skimmers to pulling out super-bright tones that set off her glossy dark locks. So when she arrives at this weekend’s ceremony, you can bet all eyes will be on the young Gleek, desperate to see whether her fashion mojo is still in tact. Especially as she’s been nominated for the ‘lead actress in a comedy series’ award thanks to her role as goody-two-shoes Rachel Berry…

So we reckon we’ve got this one sussed because Lea has already been around town harping on about her frock choice (most helpful). “I picked out my dress and it’s super comfortable,” Lea said at the BlackBerry Torch party. Plus, as chance would have it, the Emmys take place on the starlet’s birthday, so of course, it’s “a perfect party dress.” And Lea let slip another clue: she’s a big fan of Zac Posen. So armed with a stash of clues, we’re putting our money on this flirty frock in vibrant pink from the designer’s A/W ‘10 collection. Not only would it be the perfect showcase for those mile-long pins, but we reckon Lea’s got what it takes to pull of something a little fun and funkier than the standard fare. And, hey, this girl ain’t no wallflower.

But before you go thinking Grazia Daily has gone completely doolally – ‘surely little-miss-diva wouldn’t ditch full-blown glamour for comfort?!’ – we have a Plan B. You see, the starlet is keeping us on our toes with some crafty double-bluffing, and admittedly she must have oodles of choice, but we are not ones to be fooled. So when Lea confessed that “I love Oscar de la Renta…he’s my black tie guy” – a point that she perfectly proved with the designer’s gloriously frothy gown at the Golden Globes – we took action. Step forward this gwageous tiered gown from Oscar’s Resort 2011 collection. And as Hollywood stylist Lindsay Albanese says, we can expect to see “a ton of pastels and cream” come Sunday night. So if Lea is after a floor-sweeper, we reckon this one fits the bill, don’t you?

We move onto January Jones who, as Betty Draper in ‘Mad Men’, has sent Team Grazia into quite the tiz woz. So we’re gagging to see what the ‘lead actress in a drama series’ nominee will pull out of the bag when she steps before the flashbulbs. For starters, we know the lucky lady has bagged herself a dress she’s long been lusting after. “I saw the dress a few months ago when a designer put it out there, and I saw it in a couple magazines and I just fell in love with it,” January gushed. “I had a fitting a couple weeks ago and it looks cool.” Oh, we’re sure it’ll be more than “cool”, dear. Just look at her show-stopping turn at last year’s ceremony when she went futuristic-meets-glam in a stunning Atelier Versace gown, or how about the frilly Dolce & Gabbana number she wore in ‘08?

“Comfort in these dresses is not an option. As long as it looks good, I’ll suck it up,” January has said. So seeing as tight corseting ain’t going to stop her, how about she goes the whole hog with this stunner from Versace’s A/W ‘10 line? Wacky and wonderful, you might think, but as Jones’ super-hero-esque outfit for the Met Ball proved, she’s quite the stylestunt woman. And wouldn’t it be ace to see her breaking with tradition and working a vibrant hue? No more dress deja vu for you, Ms Jones. What’s more, the actress has admitted that she likes “to shock” (hurrah!) so will she surprise us with a OTT jaw-dropper, like this organza beauty we fell in love with on Dior’s Resort 2011 catwalk? Or perhaps she’ll just go all out Gaga-at-the-Grammys on us? Oh, please make it happen Janners!

Our final musings lie with Claire Danes. Always a winner in the style stakes, she’s a force to be reckoned with when it comes to topping our Best Dressed list. Claire’s been nominated in the ‘lead actress in a movie’ category for her star turn in ‘Temple Grandin’ so naturally, she gave her trusty designer pal a call to secure that winning look. Yep, Zac Posen is clearly a popular boy because he’s making the Danes’ dress, and our sources reveal that the dream team have been working on it together (sweet!). “The actual shape is determined but the actual colour I don’t know,” the actress revealed, “I think certain colours work better on me than others.”

So although we reckon she’d rock pretty much any colour, judging from past outings, Claire is quite the girlie girl, often reverting to pale pinks, softs nudes or shimmering silvers for her glad rags. The same goes for the previous Posen creations we’ve seen Claire sporting – a lot of feminine purples and striking prints are on display to play up to that girl-next-door vibe. And you know what they say – if it ain’t broke…

So we’ve come across the very thing to get Zac and Claire inspired, direct from the designer’s recent Resort collection. It’s floaty, it’s feminine, it’s a beautiful shade of lavender. We couldn’t imagine a more fitting choice. See peeps? It’s easy peasy! The question is – will our prayers be answered come Sunday night? Only time will tell so get crossing those fingers! And remember to check back here on Tuesday morning for the full frock-a-thon. WE. CAN’T. WAIT.

Hotels during 2010 Fashion Weeks

Fall means fashion – it’s the time of year when designers debut their latest creations for the coming year and vy for a cover shot on the world’s most fashionable magazines. From New York to Paris, Fashion Week is meant to prove one important point: you are what you wear.

While some hotels are contributing to the fashion scene this year, others are hosting a meeting spot for those who want to see-and-be-seen off the catwalk.

New York Fashion Week, Sept. 9-16: New York and fashion go hand-in-hand. The Bryant Park Hotel is undoubtedly the grand dame of fashion week hotels, but new hotels like Fashion26 and Andaz 5th Avenue have recently hit the scene, offering another option for travelers. Fifth Avenue itself has always been renowned as a major shopping mecca, but if you look closely you might even get a few fashion tips from the hotel staff. At the Andaz 5th Avenue, women wear figure-flattering black wrap tops, paired with either skinny black pants or pencil skirts, and Tumi side bags, while men wear sleek collared shirts and suit jackets that have extra pockets. Women’s accessories are all statement pieces; either a striking crystal drop necklace and clear resin watch or a silver snake cuff and clear hoop earrings.

London Fashion Week: Sept. 17-22: The Metropolitan is the place in London town to see and be seen off the runway, and it offers great opportunities for celebrity-watching in posh Mayfair. It’s likely you’ll be famished after a day of watching models strut their stuff down the runway, so take advantage of the hotel’s signature guilt-free version of the trad afternoon tea. Accompaniments are made using flour substitutes, low fat crème fraîche, and fresh fruit purées. If you’re feet need a little pampering after walking in your stilettos all day, check out the Metropolitan London COMO Shambhala Urban Escape, which offers a variety of spa packages.

Milan Fashion Week, Sept. 22-28: Few do fashion quite like Milan, but if you’re going to rock the house that Versace built, you better do it in style. The place to be in Milan during Fashion Week is along Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga, the place to stay: Park Hyatt Milan. The hotel offers stylish accommodations that combine authentic Italian finishes with sleek amenities and state-of-the-art technology. La Cupola, the lobby lounge in the heart of the hotel, is already famous among the Who’s Who as it overlooks the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele.

Paris Fashion Week, Sept. 29-Oct. 7: Home to Chanel, Hermes, Dior, and Louis Vuitton, Paris is the epitome of all things fashion and decor. Whether you stay at the Plaza Athenee or along the Champs-Élysées, Paris Fashion Week will surely be seven days you’ll never forget. Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme was ranked fifth in Europe as the ‘World’s Best Hotel Service’ in 2009, the staff will make sure fashionistas have everything they need from sun-up to sun-down. Or take affection for textiles to the bedroom at Pavillon de la Reine, nestled in Paris’ fashionable Marais quarter, every room features sumptuous materials to create a rich and well-appointed, yet subtly refined look. This is, after all, Paris, so after you’ve checked in and organized your wardrobe, head out for a little shopping of your own.

Youngest of Five Original Supermodels Turns 40

Original Supermodels

The youngest of the original supermodels, Claudia Schiffer, turns 40 August 25th. She made her mark on fashion in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. She was only 17 when Karl Lagerfeld enlisted her to model for Chanel; a subsequent ad campaign for Guess played up her resemblance to the actress Brigitte Bardot and turned her into an international star. The German-born model, who’s married to filmmaker Matthew Vaughn (he directed “Kick-Ass”), recently gave birth to her third child and continues to pose part-time for brands like Chanel, Ferragamo, Alberta Ferretti (she’s the face of their signature fragrance) and Yves St. Laurent.

The All-American Cindy Crawford, now (44), appeared on hundreds of magazine covers. She also pitched Pepsi, hosted the MTV series “House of Style,” and married the movie star Richard Gere. They divorced four years later. She re-married in 1998 to businessman Rande Gerber, Crawford has launched several successful businesses of her own, including an eponymous Home Collection and a line of anti-aging skincare products called Meaningful Beauty.

Christy Turlington (41), a face of Missoni, Valentino, Chanel, Revlon, and Calvin Klein, Turlington starred, alongside Linda, Cindy, and Naomi, in George Michael’s model-packed video for “Freedom! 90.” The yoga devotee has launched two active-wear brands, Nuala and Mahnuala, and is a partner in the all-natural ayurvedic skincare line, Sundari. This year, Turlington — who’s married to actor/director Ed Burns — released a documentary, “No Woman No Cry,” about at-risk pregnant women around the world and co-starred with models Karen Elson and Natalia Vodianova in Louis Vuitton’s fall 2010 campaign.

A leggy blonde Australian known within the industry as “The Body,” Elle Macpherson (47) appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue a record five times. She also kept a foot in the high-fashion world, walking runways for designers like Azzedine Alaia and John Galliano. The model-turned-entrepreneur’s signature lingerie line, Elle Macpherson Intimates, is a best-selling success, stocked at Bloomindales, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus. She’s also launched a skincare collection, called (of course) “The Body,” and recently became the host of “Britain’s Next Top Model.” And, in March, she made a triumphant return to the runway, closing Louis Vuitton’s buzzed-about fall 2010 show.

Canadian-born Linda Evangelista (45) got her start when she was spotted by a talent agent at a Miss Teen Niagara pageant in 1978. Ten years later, she lost a number of major runway bookings when she suddenly swapped her then-shoulder-length hair for a boyish, close-cropped style, but her ever-changing ‘do eventually became her trademark. A face of Revlon, Donna Karan, and Versace, she famously told a reporter in 1990 that she and her supermodel colleagues “don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day.” Evangelista has worked more or less steadily for the last twenty years — recent gigs include ad campaigns for Prada, Talbots, and John Galliano.
